Ripon NFL Flag Football

Thank you for visiting our web site to learn more details about our NFL Flag football program. This year marks the first season that the Ripon Youth Football program will be bringing the NFL Flag program to our community.

We have partnered with USA football to bring the NFL Flag football program to Ripon!

*** The Rule book used for this program can be found here ***

NFL FLAG Powered by USA Football provides opportunities for children grades 1st-6th to enjoy America's favorite sport. Players benefit by being physically active through non-
contact, continuous action while learning the fundamentals
of football, lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship.

The NFL Youth Programs were developed to help kids and their families have an enjoyable experience every time they step on a football field. As part of this, the NFL asked kids, parents, and coaches about their likes, dislikes, and concerns, not only with
playing football, but with the overall youth sports experience.

As a result of this important research, we have developed seven guiding principles that make up the overall philosophy that we apply to all the NFL Youth Programs.

1. Make it fun
2. Limit standing around
3. Everyone plays
4. Teach every position to every participant
5. Emphasize the fundamentals
6. Incorporate a progression of skill development for every participant
7. Yell encouragement, whisper constructive criticism

These guiding principles align with the objectives of Ripon Youth Football.

The objective of this Organization shall be to implant firmly in the youth of the community the ideals of good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage and respect for authority, so that they may be well-adjusted, stronger and happier children and will grow to be decent, healthy and trustworthy adults.

To achieve this objective, this Organization will provide a supervised program of competitive football games for boys and girls from ages to be determined by the board of directors, under the rules and polices of the Organization and the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.

History

For the past several years the Ripon Youth Football program would send their K - 3rd grade flag football teams to the Oshkosh YMCA to participate in their flag football program. We have long appreciated the YMCA for their organization of their program, but as a program we desired to have a contact free flag football program.

Furthermore, our 4th graders played a tackle football season a the YMCA against combined 4th/5th grade teams from Oshkosh, and our and 5th Grade tackle football team played in a condensed Heart of the Valley (HoV) football season. The majority of the HoV teams are 6th -8th grade for tackle.

2016 Season

4th and 5th grade tackle football is being eliminated from our program in 2016. . The Ripon Youth Football board, again in partnership with the high school, agree that even with these league changes, the benefits of tackle football at the 4th and 5th grade are minimal at best. We are on or slightly ahead of the curve nationally in making this decision to eliminate tackle football for these two age groups form our program

Ripon Youth Football has been granted an approved application to bring the NFL Flag CO-ED football league to Ripon for K-5th grade. For the past two seasons we have tried to convince the YMCA the benefits of adopting the NFL flag 5-on-5 rules, but our efforts have been unsuccessful. Ripon Youth Football is on the front end of the changes occurring nationally to take contact out of youth football and embrace programs like those offered by USA football and the NFL Flag football.

The K-5th grade flag season is not set in stone but we are looking at a six week season where the games would be played in Ripon on 8/27, 9/10, 9/17, 9/24, 101, and 10/8. We are looking at having these games in the morning, with the exception of 9/24 and 10/1. On those two dates we are trying to organize evening games. We have invited our neighboring community, Berlin, to also send teams, and they are actively organizing themselves to do just that. We have set the program up so that each player gets a reversible NFL Flag jersey, and their own set of flags to keep as part of their registration.

2017 Season

We have changed our flag to now be 1st - 6th grade. We are again looking at a six week season were the games are played in Ripon. Our season is going to be Saturday mornings from 9/16 - 10/21. Two games are going to be played on Saturday night and those two weeks are 9/30 and 10/7. We are again inviting our neighboring communities to participate. Each player will again recieve a reversible NFL Flag jersey, and their own set of flags to keep as part of their registration. We do have a firm ending registration date of 7/15. Between 7/15 and 8/1 there is a $25 late fee. After 8/1 kids will be added to a wait list and only be added to a team if a player drops out or moves.
